Longtime Boomer Esiason Foundation volunteer Jerry Cahill last night was inducted into the Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) Hall of Fame for his contributions as a pole vault coach at Iona Preparatory School.
CHSAA is made up of Catholic high schools in the New York area and has three sections: New York (Manhattan, Bronx, Westchester and Staten Island); Brooklyn-Queens; and Nassau-Suffolk. It is the largest such Catholic high school athletic league in the United States. Iona Prep is an all-boys school in New Rochelle, N.Y., with an enrollment of roughly 750 students.
Cahill has been on the Iona Prep track and field staff since 1988 and is only the ninth coach from the school to be inducted into the CHSAA Hall of Fame.
Cahill, 54 and living-breathing-succeeding with cystic fibrosis, brings extensive experience in pole vaulting to his young athletes. He competed at the college level for the University of Connecticut and later for the New York Athletic Club, where he achieved a personal best of 16′ 10 3/4″. He continues to compete in pole vault competitions in the masters division.
Congratulations, Jerry Cahill! We’re proud of you and all of your athletes.
