University of Michigan senior David Molk has been named the recipient of the 2011 Rimington Trophy. Molk was previously a finalist for the 2010 Rimington Trophy. This year he became the first recipient of the Big Ten Conference’s Rimington/Pace Award. He becomes the second center from the University of Michigan to receive the award.
The Rimington Trophy was established in 2000 to honor the most outstanding center in Division I-A college football. The award, named for BEF President and former NFL center Dave Rimington, is presented each January at a gala in his home state of Nebraska.
“I am truly humbled to be the Rimington Trophy recipient. It’s such an honor considering all of the great centers around the country, including the other finalists. It’s an individual award, but it’s a credit to our offensive line, our team and our coaching staff. I’m proud to represent the University of Michigan,” said Molk.
The Lemont, Ill. native broke into the Michigan starting lineup in 2008, earning his first varsity letter as the Wolverines’ starting center. That same year, Molk led the Wolverines offensive line to a victory over Florida in the Capital One Bowl. The 2010 season was a breakout year for Molk, having started all 13 games at center and earning his third varsity letter. He was named a finalist for the 2010 Rimington Trophy and was a First Team All-Big Ten selection by the conference’s coaches. He was also co-recipient of Michigan’s Hugh R. Rader Memorial Award, presented to the team’s top offensive lineman.
By the end of the 2011 season, Molk’s offensive line ranked second in the Big Ten in rushing offense and fewest sacks allowed. He was named a First Team All-American by the Walter Camp Foundation and a First Team All-Big Ten selection by the conference’s coaches.
“David has been an instrumental part of Michigan’s offensive line throughout his entire career with the Wolverines. Having been a finalist for the 2010 Rimington Trophy, it comes as no surprise that he has once again exceeded expectations this season. We are extremely proud to name him the winner of the 2011 Rimington Trophy. Congratulations to David and all the watch list candidates and finalists,” said Dave Rimington.
The 2011 Rimington Trophy presentation banquet will be held January 14, 2012, at the Rococo Theatre in Lincoln, Neb. For more information, please visit the Rimington Trophy website.
